Sanuk’s Tubeflop – Really? Is this cool?

Sanuk Tubeflop - The New UGG

Today I read an interview from Transworld Biz highlighting a new product from sandal innovator, Sanuk. The product? A women’s flip flop with attached knee-high sock. Yes, you read that correctly. The Tubeflop is not a trick performed on your HO Watersports towable, it is the latest in women’s footwear fashion.

In the interview with Sanük Founder, Jeff Kelley, he claims that the Tubeflop was inspired by his travels in Asia. He doesn’t want the Tubeflop to become a “teeny bopper, 12-year-old item” and is pursuing non-conventional retailers like Fred Segal on Melrose. Kelley states that Brad Pitt and Elton John shop there (ideal consumers for this product?) and that Fred Segal would like to feature the Tubeflop in an upcoming fashion show that Vogue is hosting at their Melrose store location.

Sanuk Tubeflop - Not for Teeny Boppers

Kelley is hoping that the Tubeflop will become the new Ugg and I agree that people in Melrose probably don’t need to be wearing fur lined boots year-round. I’m just not sure that the Tubeflop offers that timeless fashion appeal as the Ugg.   Ugh, I think I’ll stick to wearing my Sanuk Sidewalk Surfers…

See, they need to sell the socky-thing without it sticking through their sandal. ‘Cause that would be cool to wear with flipflops or whatever. And then you could have several colors/patterns. They could even have a clever little slit in the footbed so you could tuck it down in a slot to hold it in place if they really thought that was necessary (although I bet they would be great without it). And they need smaller sizes, because kids are going to want them, too.

They look good and would be fun.
