I think the first week is harder on the owners than the dogs. It only seemed like Kaz was affected for the first couple of days. Even then, she was only a little drowsy and occasionally uncomfortable looking. If it were up to her, she would be doing her pre-surgery routine of morning walks and jumping on the couch.
I think she is probably more confused than anything else. She probably wonders why we make such a fuss about her, why she has to have a weird piece of cloth wrapped around her stomach to lift her over the step, why she needs to be leashed (and accompanied by 2 humans) when going to do her business, and why she doesn't get free rein of the house anymore.
We are the ones who think she is in pain and think about how much of a bummer this whole situation is, while Kaz is perfectly happy having everyone pile up around her on the floor to pet her all day and night.
All in all, she is healing really well (or at least we think so). We've cut down her meds so she is only on her natural supplements and one dose of deramaxx in the evening. We started out with codeine every 6 hours for the first two days, then tapered it to every 8 hours for a day, then only twice a day. Yesterday, she was doing so well that we decided to not give her any. We do give her a sedative if she is seeming a bit restless in her penned off area.
The gas is much better now that she is off the meds and her bathroom breaks are getting a little easier and more consistent. She hasn't missed a meal and takes little coaxing to get up and walk to her food/water bowls.
Dr. Lozier's tech called on Saturday to check in on Kaz and I mentioned a bump that had appeared on the inside of her right leg, to the top and right of the incision site. They wanted me to email in some photographs, so I did and am just waiting to hear back on that. My guess is that it's just more localized swelling that has appeared since the overall swelling has gone down so much.
This surgery has felt a lot easier than the first one. It's still a long process and I think we're all feeling a little more stir crazy this time around, but everything seems to be going well. Our next check up is in a couple of weeks, so we'll know for sure then.
